Matthew and Music

When my first child Andrew was born, I was given the best gift ever from the hospital. A CD called "Smart Symphonies". It is classical music to help stimulate a baby's development. I learned from listening to it that much can be done with connecting the visual and auditory developments in babies.

One of my favorite things to do with Matthew that I learned from listening to this CD was taking a favorite toy or my fingers and placing it in front of his face and moving it to the same beat as the music. I have watched with all of my children their eyes move back and forth as they watch the toy or my fingers move to the specific beat of the song. What connection! I am so grateful for this tip.

The other thing I love doing is dancing with them of course to each piece of classical music. I come up with certain dancing moves that stay consistent through the whole song. I have heard repetition is so good for babies. I would imagine this is where the connections in the brain become solidified. Each song has it's own specific moves and the babies come to expect these moves as each song is played. Plus for me, it gives me some extra exercise as well.

  2. It's fun to read how much you are enjoying your children! You might be interested in the book "Scientist in the Crib" which discusses what research has discovered about how babies learn:
