As I continued to think of things to do for Christopher with his interest in apples (being that they are red), I came up with an idea of tasting the apples. With some help from a dear friend, we came up with a science experiment that would include learning about the different tastes of our tongue.
In order for Christopher to understand the different types of tastes, I knew it would be necessary for him to first understand what sour, sweet, bitter, and salty tasted like. So, our first project would be to help him learn what these were.
I got out a lemon, lettuce, salt, and sugar. I had him taste each item and then we talked about what that taste was that he was tasting. In order to help him learn some literacy, I had him write the name sour, sweet, bitter, and salty down next to the item that he tasted. I also traced a copy of the tongue on the paper and had him diagram the tongue based on where we taste each taste best. My objective in doing this was so we could include the human body in it thus incorporating science into the project.
The funnest yet unexpected project came when Christopher started taking his lemon and dipping it into the sugar. He said "Mom, this is good."
I told him that when lemons are mixed with sugar, we get lemonade. He then with much excitement in his voice said, "Mom, let's make lemonade!" Regretfully, I told him that we could not do it because we did not have enough lemons but that we could do it another day. As I started to move on, I realized that I may be missing a great opportunity. So, I blessedly stopped and said that of course we could make lemonade, just on a small scale.
I got out some measuring spoons and a cup. He then squeezed the two lemons we had in a cup. I told him to measure one tablespoon of sugar and put it in there.(He was able to learn what tablespoon and teaspoon are) We talked about the word "dissolve" and what it meant. I then told him to taste it and see if it needed any more sweetness to it.
