This summer I was desperately trying to think of something that Andrew was interested in so that I could teach him some things. After several days of thinking hard, the reality of it hit me. What was Andrew doing with most of him time? Playing with Lego's. Duh me! Lego's was the answer. And then the second answer was Star Wars.
So, together Andrew and I came up with the idea of writing a book. Like most children, Andrew loves playing with the camera. So, we came up with the idea of setting up his Lego Star Wars in specific ways as to relate a scene for an overall story line. He would then take a picture of it for the book. After many days of Andrew being up in the toy room setting up scenes with his Legos and then taking a picture, he decided it was time to print these photos out for his book.
After printing out the photos, Andrew then spent several days cutting the photos out and pasting them into a book made out of paper. He then proceeded to write the story under and above each photo.
It was so fun to see how engaged he truly became with this project. It was teaching literacy and photography plus many more things. I was so glad that I did not think too hard or I may have missed an interest that was right in front of me. Sometimes as moms we think things need to be so complicated with teaching our children when in fact things can be so simple. A lesson learned. And a book that Andrew will keep for years to come.
