" I want to be a Geologist Mom"

Lately it has been an adventure for me in discovering a true interest in Andrew. He loves school and loves every academic field that is offered to him. He seems content in learning about almost anything. I am so grateful that he has a love for learning. However, as a mom, I was interested to see if there was something that created a passion in him or a drive that led him to want to learn more even when I was not around or anyone else.

Andrew has collected rocks for years. A few years ago, we took him to a rock show to see if he wanted to learn more. He only seemed to grow tired and so I thought his interest was only in the collecting and not the discovering. As such, I dismissed the idea of giving him opportunities for this interest and moved on to other things.

A few months ago, I asked Andrew if there was anything he would like to start studying with me and he told me rocks. So, once again, I started searching for rock shows and events for him.

While attending these shows and events, I have excitingly found Andrew's new interest. Andrew plays baseball and likes it and is content. However, in comparison to rocks, Andrew comes alive. His passion to learn all that he can no longer involves mom. This is always a key to me that we are on the right track. I often find him looking at his rock book on his own. He wants to show me all of the amazing rocks and how they are formed.

While attending the local mining and mineral museum, Andrew continued to tell me how awesome the rocks were. He asked for my camera and began taking pictures of many of the rocks. He read every kind as to make a mental note on what type of rock it is.

Andrew also has been saving his money for a very expensive Lego model. When he had the opportunity to purchase a "Make your own crystal set" it seemed as though the Lego model no longer mattered. He was ready to buy as well as amethysts and other types of rocks.

I am so excited to be on the right track and hope to only find everything I can for him to discover everything he wants to about rocks. He tells me that he wants to be a geologist and seems to know exactly what they study.

Now my job is only to create enough opportunities for him so that this passion in him can come alive.
