Christopher had fallen on his knee at the park while I was helping coach baseball. His knee was slightly bleeding and he came to me for comfort. As I saw the severity of the cut, I thought of how this could be a great learning opportunity.
Call me crazy because I am, but several months ago, I found a book at the local thrift store called "All about scabs". Having seen and heard about this book many years ago, I bought it. In recent months, Christopher and I have read it several times because of the humor and interesting information it contains.
Seeing that he was about to experience a scab, I decided how amazing it would be for him to experience exactly what is talked about in the book. So, after comforting Christopher, I told him how exciting it was that he now could find out just how a scab is formed on his own body. His frown turned into a smile and he was back playing.
Well,to my amazement and before I even had a chance to read with Christopher, I found Andrew the next night reading this book to Christopher and explaining exactly how his scab was going to form.
It is always so fun and rewarding as a mom to see your own children reading to your younger children. The magic in that only makes a mother smile and realize that it is in those moments that we receive our bonus check that we do not otherwise receive.
