Purpose of Activity : Learning to Recognize Whole Words
Learning Style : Visual/Kinesthetic Learner
I feel like so much of my effort over the past few months has been teaching Matthew individual letter sounds. Matthew has become very familiar with most all of them. It has been so fun as a mom to hear him trying to sound things out wherever we go.
It dawned on me yesterday that Matthew is ready to move onto some whole language activities. This is where the challenge will now be for him. I am going to have to be very creative on how to present it to him being that he is pretty kinesthetic. As long as I can find a way to involve his body, I think we will have success.
The activity I chose to do today is something similar that I have seen in a Montessori classroom. I used words that I knew were very familiar to Matthew especially words that I know he has seen in books that we have read over and over. I also included some of his favorite things too, like animals.
Was it successful?
Yes it was. I just had hoped it would have been for a longer amount of time.
This was definitely an activity that had to be done with mom. He did not want to do it alone. We worked on sounding out the words together and then once he knew what the word said, he placed it on the picture. We took turns which always makes it feel more like a game for some reason.
I'll be interested to see how he does when he is alert and not tired being that it is not completely kinesthetic. I still consider it a hands-on activity but there is also some visual learning happening as well.
As for today......
Matching them up three times together was definitely enough for him. He was ready for his afternoon nap.
