Empowering a child to learn

Its late which I will regret tomorrow but I cannot help but write after what I just watched on Intrinsic Motivation.

Over the last few weeks, I have realized a purpose for this blog and all the posts. It is a dream that is bigger than me.

My dream as a mom is to instill a self-learner in each of my children. My desire is to raise children that know they have the ability to learn and in addition the ability to learn what they are interested in.

And bigger than me is my dream that with each of these blog posts I can tell my readers that they can do the same for their children.  My ultimate goal that is bigger than myself  is to have empowered children world wide learning because they want to and know the way to do it for themselves.

Lately, I have been learning the importance of a self-directed education.  Self directed education is something that anyone can do and must do. To me, the definition of a self-directed education is learning because I want to and I am interested. It is NOT for some grade or some degree or even for some praise from another. Although those things can be motivations and bring us satisfaction, a self-directed education means I am interested and therefore I act and find a way to learn about it.  And I believe that motivation alone is what will give us the ability to learn.   With it, we are able to see through disabilities and adversity and find ways that will work for us individually, come whatever they may be.

What God-given power!!!!

And isn't that what we really want to instill in these future leaders rather than straight "A's" ?

So, from this point on, I want my posts to be simple so that anyone reading it can say, I can do that. I can do that in five minutes.  They can also say, "I can make time for that."  I want my posts to reflect the notion that anyone can be a learner. We may need to find their source, style and their drive for learning  But, IT IS STILL POSSIBLE.

The sources, styles, and drives for learning are being discovered daily as we learn more about this powerful source called our brain.  I find it all so fascinating and am humbled at how much information is out there to learn.

We come into this world to learn. It is in us.  That intrinsic motivation must continue to shine and not be squashed by outside sources saying we are not smart enough to learn or have disabilities that cannot let us learn.  It's ludicrous. We are capable of learning and God will show us the way to do it as long as we trust in Him and ourselves.

And most importantly trust in our abilities as teachers and leaders to teach this same importance to our children especially through their critical "Formative Years".

Let's re-begin today.

Let us all be part of something so much bigger than ourselves and start empowering our children through their love for learning.
